Last time I tried rhubargb it grew happily. Happened to have dug it up as I was altering an area and it was growing pretty poorly.

At the end I had a spare bag of rotted manure so basically dug a hole, emptied the bag of manure in, racked a bit of soil in and dropped the rhubarb crown on top and covered with soil.

Damn thing grew massive.

Well, I am glad I am not the only one struggling to grow rhubarb!

Sarajane, I think you are right that the excess rain hasn't helped, especially with the first lot of crowns which were already mouldy. Sadly, i don't think in my case it is just the rain! :(
I have dug well rotted manure into the planting holes of all eight crowns I have planted on the plot - honest :) And home made compost. Not planted too deep. Mulched around (but not touching) the crowns.
I have not, however, tried giving them a good talking too! So perhaps Growster, that is where I am going wrong. I will take your advice and be very stern with them on my next visit. :)
