rhubarb that won' grow
« on: April 26, 2009, 09:58 »
a few years back we were given a large rhubarb crown, we split it with my grandad, for the last 3 years, i've gone round his to pick huge sticks of the stuff, he has a really large area of rhubarb now.

Ours on the other hand we're lucky if the few sticks we get are 6 inchs long.. any tips on where we're going wrong with ours please.  Grandad didn't do anything with his, just put it in the ground.

thanks Binarose

Are you feeding it with plenty of well rotted manure ? it should really get a good bucket full late in the year  :)
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

The key words here are 'Well Rotted'. If you have used recent manure it could be another case for the aminopyrilid detective. Rhubarb is on the hit list.

Try a liquid feed like miracle gro, it may help unless its the aminopyrilid, also check the soil not waterlogged is it or too dry ??

our soil is clay under the top soil, would it do better in a barrel with fresh soil?
