Red Mite Alert
« on: September 05, 2012, 19:11 »
Hi  so far (touch wood) since I bought my coop & chickens in March I have seen no sign of Red Mite.  My coop is of traditional wooden construction (FSC) with a solid plastic floor and opaline roof.  I wash it regulary with PS and dust with Diatom. My girls do not seem reluctant to go to bed or use the nest boxes.  However I am sure the eneviatble will happen one day  SO  I saw on Ebay a 'Red Mite Alert'  that you fix to the perch and is supposed to attract the mites and warn you of their prescence. Its only £4.50inc postage  Has anyone ever used one or has advice????  Thanks

never used one but its simple to just go out any time during the day with a white piece of paper and sliding it in the nooks and crannies of a coop.
Your coop should be ok this year if the manufacturer has treated it with a good preservative.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If it attracts mites I wouldn't want it in any of my coops!!!   ::)

Probably, I think if you put a small tube attached to underneath the perch they would hide in it.  Saving £4.50!!!
