hen or cock?? What are your thoughts!
« on: August 13, 2012, 14:45 »
Ok, hopefully here is a photo of my 5 week old chick, Ive been convinced since very early that it was a cocke due to his tail feathers and how tall he is. So Hubby and I have now bet, and I wont say what he gets if hes right but Im not looking forward to it already ;-)

This picture shows it standing against its mum, although the Father isnt much bigger so it seems quite big! The comb seems longer than that of the mother, and its wing feathers seem much longer and lower than the hens, more like for when he struts its stuff and lowers then down! BUT it does have the bobble/hairdo on its head starting to form like the hens!

So am I going to regretting saying its a cockerel or not, thoughts pls!

He/she is 8 weeks old now, and we caught her on a hens back the other day (surely its too early for that!) or were they being playful. She is still make cheepy chick noises, how much longer do you think for crowing??

YES!!!! or no, as what am I going to do with it now :-(

Casey - yes the little one on the left, and I am sure the photo was around 5 weeks old. The large/other bird is its mum.

We have had 2 hens v's 1 cock for a while and recently brought 4 new silkies (hens??) to even numbers out, so obviously I cant really keep this new cockerel (im sure I will find it a home though!) And hubby said he was sure he heard one of the silkies trying to crow this morning opppps!!

when should I expect them to start crowing?

Thanks
