how do i make onion sets from seed? i have loads of onion seed including  ailsia craig, red baron and kelsae onion seed could i make sets from any of these?

If you plant onion seed and the bulbs that form very small bulbs they will not produce a flower next Spring but produce big bulbs.

From what I understand this is achieved by planting after mid-Summer and very close together so that only tiny bulbs will form.

Any bulbs over about 20mm will probably bolt next Spring and can be used as picklers or in the kitchen.

It is easy to get it wrong as we have all seen with batches of sets that bolt. Heat treated sets have been kept at high temperatures for about 3 weeks which kills any embro flower buds and stops any bolting.

So what you are saying is grow seed and bulbs below 20mm will porduce big onions and above 20mm will bolt to seed. Can this be done with the kelsae onion variety or do are they done best from seed only?

I'd sow them from seed early, much less hassle
