Pumpkin
« on: August 17, 2012, 07:42 »
I planted a pumpkin plant and 18 sweetcorn plants about 8weeks ago. Whilst the sweetcorn have come along in leaps and bounds the pumpkin plant has hardly grown. Do they take so long to get established?

Did you plant a small pumpkin plant or sow seeds? Seeds should really be sown in April/May so 8 weeks ago would have been late. Also, the comparative cool and damp conditions this year for most of us, have not suited cucurbits well so a plant would have struggled.

I planted a small pumpkin plant bought from the local garden nursery. I didn’t really have an area specifically for the plant so I just dug a hole and put it in. I’m thinking that if it doesn’t start growing soon I may as well dig it up to make space for something else  :(

What have you fed it? They are greeedy little monsters, I have mine in pots, and they have had a mix of feeds, started on miracle grow (as I was given some) and thought pre flowering healthy leaves are good, and now they are starting to fruit they are on veg feed (cant remember which one!) this is on top of some manure in the pots, and slow release pellets too.
They are looking very happy.
I made the mistake in the past of under feeding them, and had little growth!

Also what type is it? As the bush ones dont grow as big as the big trailing ones!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

As above, they are very greedy.

My method..
Dig a hole approx three feet in diameter about two feet deep, fill with good rotted muck to about 8 inches from the top and fill this with a good compost to make a small mound, plant your punk'n' in that.

I transplant around mid may, you may still get something but i fear your a tad late putting it in for it to go mad.

Similar approach to aidy but I build up rather than dig down.

I just sling on about 2 feet of compost and composting stuff that hasn't rotted yet the year before in autumn and let it cook down until spring and then plant in that. The worms take the good stuff down into the soil to feed the roots.
