Do chickens need company?
« on: August 14, 2012, 19:57 »
Our Maran has been a victim of bum pecking (blood drawn) and despite numerous attempts to return her to the flock she's been attacked repeatedly so she now has a hut and run to herself.

I'm thinking that a more docile bird could go in with her.

Questions then:

Does she necessarily need a coop-mate?  She can see the other chickens where she is and doesn't seem unhappy?

She is quite a docile bird and seems to love the company of people so if we were to be paired with another bird what breed would you recommend?  I was thinking of a smaller "pet" breed perhaps where the Maran would likely be the dominat bird also have thought about a duck but having read up don't think that would be the best move.  She was housed with a Sussex (aggressive), Babcock (placid) and Brown hen (somewhere inbetween).

Thoughts and ideas please.

I would agree that she needs company.  I have found Orpingtons to be pretty placid but there will always be a little pecking order behaviour when you introduce a new hen.

What about a little pekin bantam? They are lovely little birds. And polish are too, very friendly (one of my faves). Or a silkie. They are super docile!
