Rita - prolapsed ovi duct.
« on: November 04, 2007, 20:33 »
Hi, I discoverd an egg with blood on it yesterday and checking the chucks found that Rita, one of my new "ex battery hens", she's the sorriest looking one of them, had a largish mass hanging out of her rear end.

Off to vets on Saturday morning, he said she had a prolapsed ovi duct and it would need stitching back in.  Left her & picked her up a couple of hours later after putting in a purse stitch.  He showed me how to remove stitches if needed, which I did today as she was trying to lay another egg.Her egg broke inside her but I managed to get everything out.

She was as good as gold while I fiddled about around her rear end with my other half just gently holding her and talking calmly to her.

Her bits remained inplace happily however i'm worried that it will keep happening everytime she lays an egg.

Is there anyway I can prevent her laying so as to avert further damage to her.  She's spending a second night in a pet carrier in the house (I let her out in the garden during the day).   I really feel for this hen, such a sorry looking girl.
Rita

you cannot stop her laying other than stop feeding her properly and that will take time and not be nice  ,  i usually just put kyjelly on my finger and pop the thing back in , she needs time for the flesh at the stich point to mend and this will then stop  it happening again . just watch her for a few days until she is able tpo pass eggs normally
still alive /............

I'm surprised the vet stitched it. My vet gave one of my girls an anti-inflammatory shot and within 2 days it was back inside her and everything was fine. :?

As Munty says, but keep a good eye on her.  If she has a prolapse the other hens could start pecking at it - not nice are they

Hi Aunt Sally - yes thats why shes taken up residence in our house.

Thanks Agapanthus - i'm going back to vet monday with Rita i'll suggest anti inflams.  He may have given her one as well as antibios, I know she had a few shots on Saturday.  She was a bit of a mess though.

Even after removing the stitches she was struggling with the egg.

I thought vets could give them something to stop them laying - an injection or something?
I'm not necessarily advocating it as a course of action, as I really don't know a lot about it, just something I read somewhere.

Hi Rita still a bit worrying to look at.  Still sticking out a bit at rear, mucous ducts all dried up and crusty.  In herself appears quite happy, potters around garden with rest.

Back to vet again, anti bios & anti inflams (yes he did give her anti inflam injection on Saturday).  Not much more we can do.  Shes still eating well (pooing well too)!  Gets pampered (plenty of mealworms etc).

Goes back to vet agian on Wednesday.

you can sort the mucous duct out ,it will irritate her ,put some ky jelly on it ,then any moisure will stay inside the jelly net to the skin ,u can use warm soapy water to remove crusts

Ah!  Cheers i'd noticed you'd mentioned KY before.  I'll give it a whirl.  Not looking forward to buying it in chemist, with funny looks from girls they're wondering what sort of bloke needs KY (as if they didn't know ah ah!)
