Broody???
« on: June 01, 2012, 22:17 »
I think my miss henny penny is broody. earlier on i noticed her missing from the others my partner opened the nesting box to see only to get growled at and attacked lol which i have to say was pretty funny  we tried moving her and within 2 mins she was back in there. she wasnt laying as they had all already laid today. Also earlier on i noticed her putting bits of wood shavings and things on her back which i didnt think nothing of until now. She is a hybrid. I dont really want to get live eggs as im new to this anyway and just wouldnt have the experience. Will it just naturally go away or do i need to try the cage method etc?? I think we need some thick glove when we next try to move her lol

If you leave her like this she will stay broody for many weeks, getting more and more out of condition. It really is best to try and break her out of this state.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If you have a cage try that, or try wrapping an ice block in a tea towel under her. I've just put eggs under mine.

Mine are always going broody but 2 or 3 days in the cage does it, once the others have laid I shut off the coop and let her out. she clucks round it for a while but gives up & joins the others. Good Luck, persistence pays. ;)

I have just had the same thing with my Black Star hybrid.  I put her in a dog cage that i managed to borrow ( must get one!). Sat the cage on four bricks. No bedding but did put a piece of wood to roost on through the bars. Used a couple of old plastic bowls which i made holes in and tied them to the cage for food and a drinking bottle with apple cider vinegar added.  I kept Star in cage til nearly dusk then let her out with the other girls (after making sure the coop was closed off) to free range for a little while.  When nearly dark i reopened coop for all of them.
Next day, lifted Star - still growling - to the cage. This only lasted a couple of days until i noticed that she had no interest in trying to get into the coop to nest and was happy to stay scratching around with the other three girls!
As a novice myself  I hope this helps you in the chook keeping journey. After two weeks of getting mine I also had to over come sour crop! :)
