onions
« on: May 15, 2012, 00:48 »
I bought one bag of onions on Saturday that were half price ( really cheap) is it too late to plant them now if we get them in this week, only on the packet it says plant between March and July but a friend of my daughters says its too late, if we can't plant them will they keep or not, I'm not too worried about planting them just to see what happens to be honest as they were less than £1 to buy :)

It's actually a bit late now since the peak growth time for onions is in about a month but as you have them you might as well plant them since they will not keep until next year. Who knows, you might still get something useful out of them.

I have planted sets in May, but got very little in the way of return.

You may as well pop them in if you have space though, as they won't store for another year.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

last year i got a bag for some sort of turbo variety (not sure of the full name) for 12p from Wilko's and planted them in June - admit that is late but by Oct few were a very good size others were small but usable. they were fed well with groworganic diluted tea and weather was very good too.

I have had such a poor germination of onions this year that I have resorted to planting sets. They went in about 10days ago and are sprouting. General feeling is that May is such a cold month that many  types of seedling are suffering.
One thing's for sure...they won't grow in the bag.

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

I feel an experiment coming on.  Last year I bought some reduced Turbo onions from Wilkinson's and they did really well, but I that was in April.

I happened to be in Wilkinson's again today, and lo, they had a large bag of Sturon onion sets for 37 pence.

As my efforts at onions from seed this year has come to nought - I have managed to raise 2 very thin dodgy plants only, I have invested said 37 pence and will pop them in tomorrow.

Interested to see if anything comes of them, but at that price, worth a punt when the alternative is no onions at all apart from the shallots.

Once they sprout give them a feed such as growmore to encourage the leaves to grow big which will feed the bulb.

I slap a circle of growmnore around each bulb late May & then water it in if needed this seems to help.

99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.
