Sowing runner beans and squash seeds advice!
« on: April 18, 2012, 17:01 »
Hi, can anyone tell me when I should be sowing runner bean and squash seeds and can they be kept in my un-greenhouse or do they need to be indoors until planting out?

I won't be sowing mine for another couple of weeks and I wouldn't risk them in the unheated greenhouse until the last week or so of May - but others who do actually grow in unheated greenhouses might advise differently.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I am a bit further South, but usually I sow the runner bean seeds in modules in the cold frame at the beginning for May and put them out in the allotment at the end of May. My squashes were very poor last year, so I may wait a bit longer for them.

according to my diary, in the greenhouse last year I sowed courgettes/squash on 21st April and runner beans in on 9th may....but as I'm in the South I think you should probably sow a couple of weeks later  ;)

I remember from a previous thread that your greenhouse seems amazingly warm, matt

Others may be much chillier at night I believe

Mine are warm as well.

In their packets.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

And mine.....

Some growers like to give themselves a lot of hard work. The earlier you sow some seeds the more work you will have.
You will have to unravel runner beans ...
Pot on more times....
Extra heartache when temps fall ....

I sow squashes and beans during the first week of May.
Whats the rush ???

I sow squashes and beans during the first week of May.

I can't get the hang of when to sow stuff - I keep getting tricked by the packet instructions.

JUst checked my diary and I planted Runner Beans (Galaxy & Kelvedon)  and Peas (Alderman) in raised beds with sheltered sides on 27th March ! Nothing showing yet.

Broad Beans went in on 18th March and are now 2 inches high but only popped up last weekend.

You will have to unravel runner beans ...

Don't remind me - I'd just managed to forget the trauma of trying to do that ...  *shudder*
