In the next couple of weeks i.e. towards the end of April, sow a single seed in a 3 inch pot. :)

We have leeks coming along in root trainers at the moment, some would disagree with that method. We've also grown them in trays until large enough to plant outside.

Our DD sows his in cat litter trays.

I use the deep meat joint trays.

As long as they are quite deep you can use anything you want really.

I use the root trainers for all my beans, apart form the broad beans, but yes anytime towards the end of the month for sowing.

I sow my runner beans the last week of april. 1 seed each into home made paper pots. There is a thread on how to make them on here somewhere!
I can then plant them out when the last frost has gone, paper pot an all, which will just rot away. Worked a peach last year!!
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

I planted mine in loo roll tubes yesterday. Last year I used the paper pots and they did well but I have loo roll tubes spare so thought I would give them a try. 40 Cobra - just hope for decent weather to continue.

Traditionally Bean Day in our family is 12th May and you have to plant your runner beans on that day.

I tend to do them first week of may though, depending on weather and what else i have to do. but then i alsways was a bit of a rebel!  :tongue2:

Ah yes! 12th May that's rook shooting day. The day to plant runners and marrows direct into the ground.

You can also start them in pots about the end of April and keep them sheltered until all frost has gone before planting out.

Or you can get dwarf beans and plant them straight into the tubs that will be their seasonal home and keep the fleece handy. I'm not chasing runner beans up into the sky any more.
