Beneficial Climbing Plants
« on: April 04, 2012, 22:05 »
Hello. I have been looking into getting some climbing plants to grow on my allotment. I have seen some websites suggesting honeysuckle, but someone told me it attracts blackfly. Has anyone got any good suggestions for climbing plants. Thanks

sweetpeas ar an allotment standby, I always grow some by the shed and at the end of the bean frame to attract pollinating insects ;)

Cant comment on the black fly and honeysuckle, but I have in the past companian plant with nasturtium cos the black fly love it and leave otherstuff alone.  I also will have sweetpeas on the lotty for attracting pollinators.

One person on my plot has clematis growing over his shed and a few climbing/rambling (Not sure which ) roses, always looks good when in flower :D

I grew venlo pickling cucumber (gherkins to you and me) up the side of our shed. Its 6ft wide and we grew 3 plants, they provided loads of gherkins for eating or pickling. They reached right up to the roof!

Id recommend them highly and will be doing the same again this year.

If you want pretty, then try black eyed susan or morning glory, were pretty and easy to grow annuals, or as already suggested sweetpeas (which we use to hide the compost bin).
