I just didn't cover them as they were so tiny

Same with celery, which came up a day later than celeriac  :)

Out of interest, is that a general rule of thumb, small seeds = uncovered? Just I sowed some even smaller seeds the other day and covered them. Don't have any more of those though so if they don't come up then not much I can do about it!

Rough rule of thumb seeds should be planted as deep as they are thick so yes tiny seeds just left on the surface, I water before I sow, then give them a gentle mist. Some seeds need dark to germinate, so a piece of glass and a sheet of newspaper do the trick, others like strawberries need light to germinate, so just the sheet of glass. Unless in a propagator of course, then you don't need the glass

Just come across an old pack of T & M "Monarch" celeriac.

It states to sow seed on the surface!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've not grown Celeriac before, but my wife likes it so we thought we would try. My seed packet says to cover the seeds (see picture), but I did do some reading up on the interweb before buying them and I didn't spot anywhere that said to plant them on the surface of the compost?

Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.

Not so much side shoots, (they don't have any!), but lower leaves.

Here's the RHS take:

Thanks DD, I read this in Violet Stevenson's notes only this morning, and assumed they were a bit like those tiny roots which sometimes escape sideways from a parsnip.

I went to a local garden centre and while I was there checked on the back of the seed packets of several different seed companies and T&M were the only company that said sow seed on the packet. Perhaps I should re-assess my opinion of T&M.

In all honesty the real reason we popped into the garden centre was for a bacon butty. Best bacon butties in the area.   And lots of things for my garden :D
