When to plant onions grown from seed under glass?
« on: March 14, 2012, 16:17 »
Title says it all really. Planted two lots of seed (one boxing day, one mid-Feb, both now identical is size about four inches, most on second or third leaf ::) ) that have been in the cold frame, open every day the last few weeks but closed at night.

When would people think is right to plant them out? And am I more worried about doing it at a certain time or waiting until they are a certain size?

Thanks,

Kosh

Checked with my dairy - mine went out on 12th May last year - sowed on time, but I was late planting everything out.

However, they made cracking onions, so I don't think you need panic yet!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Many thanks, shall wait a while longer. I may put them outside in the modules and only bring into the cold frame/shed if it's forecast frosty. I'm struggling for space in the cold frame is all....

Onions are frost hardy so that should not be a problem. It is difficulty in handling if they are too small, that is the deciding factor.

Mine are at about the same stage as yours Kosh, and I have just left them permanently outside for a few weeks now, very hardy. My first time from seed too, so will just play it by ear as to when to plant out.
