Which seeds?
« on: December 12, 2011, 12:50 »
I wonder if someone can help.  My brother in law would like some vegetable seeds for Christmas as he is soon getting a vegetable patch.   Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about growing.
He has never grown anything before so can anyone recommend something that is easy to grow, and maybe a bit unusual.   I realise there is lees than 2 weeks to go so also needs to be easy to get hold of!

Does anyone have any ideas?
The glass is neither half empty or half full - it is simply the incorrect size! Find a new glass!

Phone up the seed merchants and get them to send you their catalogues,  Gift wrapped and a tenner.  Tell him to choose his own seeds!     Easy Peasy.      Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Your local garden center will have this seasons seeds in by now.  If you do want to go ahead and chose I would go for the basics rather than exotic fruits.  Carrots, Peas, runner beans, a couple of different tomatoes, dwarf french beans and a selection of salad leaves

Google D.T.Brown as they are P+P free. Easy ones are mixed salad, radishes, beetroot, sugar snap peas, dwarf french beans (or climbing along with the sugar snaps), leeks, runner beans, carrots - depends on your soil.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

There's one of the seed merchants that doesn't put instructions on its seed packets.  Double check that D T Brown isn't that merchant before ordering!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have no doupt what Yorkie says is correct,  add a second tenner for a gardening book, or a subscription to "Kitchen Garden".

Have you thought of buying him John's book for £5.99, which come with lots of free seeds.

Best of both worlds imho  :D
