Hope your all well.

Could you give me some advice please.

Following on from a article discussed on BBC Cornwall I am going to be taking in 6 ex-battery hens mid December to join my existing 4 girls.

I've recently from freecycle picked up a nice hand made chicken coop, whilst a bit Heath Robinson with a bit of TLC (which will be done before pickup) it'll be great and more than secure for my new brood.

However this has housed chickens before, and when I picked it up it still had bedding (straw and sawdust) from the previous occupants. I've cleaned this out thoroughly but need some advice as to if this is enough or if I need to do more?

These chickens have had a bad enough life to this date and I don't want to add to it with a daft rookie error if their house isn't' up to scratch! :-)

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum.

If you can jet wash the coop inside and out (if it is made of solid wood and not ply), then treat with hillfooters diatom slurry inside

then treat the outside with a pet friendly wood preservative like Ronseal.  Make sure that it is completely dried out before housing your hens and you should be good to go.
