Cleaning a second hand coop?
« on: May 26, 2010, 06:07 »
Morning all

I have a second hand coop and pen (god bless eBay - went cheap with all it bits, food, drinkers, feed bins and so on).

However, he told me his hens all died and they won't have more because it upset the kids.  I asked what they died off and he said 'natural causes'.  They were ex-bats - the coop mis 18 months old.

How should I clean the coop to be on the safe side?  He did seem a very genuine sort but you never know.

I would anyway, so I would scrub it out with vanodine disinfectant (you could use Jeyes) then when dry spray all over inside with poultry shield (especially in all the little nooks and crannies). Again allow to dry and don't forget to treat the outside with a suitable wood preserver to help prolong it's life.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull - I will have a trip out for supplies once I've put up my new poultry net.

Gosh life is suddenly getting hectic.

I really love it.  Having done the 'farming' thing on much bigger acreages, it's great to be able to do it as a hobby with no pressure to make a living from it, or have the breed that suits the commercial market and so on.

We looked at chicken production at the time and I was so horrified I never considered it again.

The Rescue Centre dropped off 5 tame sheep a couple of days ago but the 8 pigs are stabled locally till we can make somewhere 'pig-proof'  :D :D :D

I have some 'Total Mite Kill' which I think is Permethrin based.  Poultry Shield is Malathion?

Will they do the same job for spraying the coop?
