hi all. ive had my chooks over a year and have to say had so many problems but,,,,
at last evrything seemed to settled down but now, 2 chooks taken to sleeping in their nest box, they have always been on perch. also im find a egg each day in different places. always laid in nest box but now 1 each day either in the run, on floor of house, can anyone shed any light as to the change please. o and 1 spent a night in run as didnt want to go in house. they have all been together for over a year now. i have to say they are not the nicest of chooks, they all had to be beak clipped at one point as was pecking our poor little one so badly, blood everywhere and now 6 months on they are all together and seem ok, i do think its the little one that may be laying her egg everywhere. like i said nothing different to worry them. hope someone can help. cheers everyone

It might be worth getting a couple of plastic/china eggs and leaving them in the nest box to see if that encourages them to lay in there during the day.  If it were me I would block the nest box off at night just before they settle (and remove it when they are asleep) so they don't sleep in there as I like to keep it clean so I get clean eggs.  You could also block it off with something that they can easily move out of the way like a seed tray just incase they need to lay in the early hours or during the night.

Hi have you checked for mite? The mite actually run along the perches. Also if there is mite in the hen house the hens wont go in there, just a thought. I didnt know about the mite and the perches but my egg buddy who is an eggspert told me about it uuuuwwww how horrible for the chickens having mites running up their legs when they are asleep.

i dont think sleeping in the nesting box is a problem, mine have done it from day one, they all snuggle together to sleep but yes i get pooey eggs but hay who cares i want wants inside so doesnt bother me?

I would agree with funkychook to check for redmite.  With the milder weather they might still be active.
