Adult dog-foxes have skulls measuring 129–167 mm, while those of vixens measure 128–159 mm.

...so if my little bantams can squeeze through a smaller door than that to roost can I assume they are safe at night?

I expect safe from foxes but not from rats, they could be a bit of a problem if the door was always open.

That's true but hopefully the rung ladder will deter - they are good climbers though aren't they....

I'm sure there is a solution and I'm determined to find it!  Lets see what the Eglu lady says on Saturday. Buy an Eglu probably!

After lots of research (and I haven't finished yet) I conclude that hens must be locked in at night - there's no getting around it. Foxes are an urban reality and can get through a 4" gap.
