Brussel sprouts grow from the base upwards.Once the lower ones are ready to pick, cut off the upper leaves and use them like cabbage.Delicious when fresh.
This will allow the plant to consentrate all its energys on producing the upper sprouts.
They will grow even sweeter and  better for it.
Some poor village is missing its Idiot

But of course there's no need to post a handy hint on all the other things you read from my mind.... I'd have to move further south...

I already know most of you were not even born then.
Only a few like Munty doing duty on the Titanic are older.

That really depends on the type when you planted them, and the weather ,but if they are starting to form it will not be that long. Pick them when they are about the size of a walnut.Dont remove to many from one plant at a time. Its best to remove a few from all the plants then to keep picking them from one plant. As winter comes in its a good idea to draw a little soil up around the stems to give them some protection.
I prefer mine to get a little frost on the buds but not the stems where they meet the soil..It does seem to make them taste a little sweeter, but not everyone agrees with that. They will all taste fine so dont worry.

If you are growing a tall variety on an exposed site it may pay you to stake them

These are falstaff, they`re under net at the moment but I think they will need staking and the net removing as they are getting a bit tall.

If they are Falstaff then they will be ready about mid Oct.With pickings until end Dec.
After a hard frost they will start to deepen in colour, and will become a deeper purple/red.Which makes for an interesting plate.

I grew them a couple of years ago and was disappointed with the size of them. They were in the same bed as my 'Trafalgar' sprouts & they did OK, so it would not appear to be the soil.

Hope you have more joy, Annie.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I find that most novelty veg can be a little disapointing in the size of the grop and the size of the plant, but they do add a little variety and colour during the bleak winter months.
Provided you steam them Falstaff will do this and they do have a mild nutty taste.
