Thanks flossiej.

Out there this morning and the woodchip bit is getting rather smelly so going to hose tonight after attempting to poo pick and raking it up a bit.

How often do people hose down woodchip areas?

On a completely different note I find it amusing that the forum now labels me an experienced member when I have barely scratched the surface. Hopefully the shared wisdom uin the answers to my many questions is sinking in

l regularly dust with Stalosan F and have had no problems with it as it is perfectly safe around poultry. It also absorbs moisture (in a big way!), so may help in that respect also.

I would advise hosing down on any dry day, but make sure that you rake through the chips as you hose so that you are giving them a thorough clean. I think the chips are then renewed every couple of months or so. If you search on here using "woodchip" you'll find quite a lot of info.

I saw today in Smallholder magazine a company supplying rubber chips (from recycled rubber) - will not rot and can be hosed down. Even if they are more expensive they will last and be less work than managing woodchips and any moulds/spores from the wood breaking down :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I'll go and have a look at my magazine, that sounds just what I need for a part of my pen!
