our 1st chicken project updated 12/7/11

hi guys today we cleared the land for the chicken project here is where they will live once i get the sheds for them to move into as you can see the lands well secure.

its job is for me to sit in while i look after the chickens, store eggs, food ect. and maybe even hatch a few lol, i can put a sign on the rd side saying eggs for sale and a bell on the gate.

Looks great so far  :)  It will be lovely to see how it develops.  Remember to keep some of the eggs for yourself and start planning how to cook them  :D

hi a quick update i built a 3x4 shed to house some probably brown nick hens, how many would comfortably sleep in there?

Couldnt tell you how many hens you could keep there.

 But did notice you had the shed on wooden pallets, is this long term? Its just that it was mentioned on one of the other forums that the pallets could rot very quickly causing the shed to lean quite badly or even collapse, have you any old paving slabs or similiar to place it on?

hi i can get paving slabs and i may put some under the pallet but i do have a seemingly unlimited supply of pallets so replacing them from time to time no problem

we have our 1st chickens kept a couple at home while they young, we went to the poulty auction had a right result two lemon cuckoo orpington pullets £20 and a pair of araucana's £5

the big coup comes tomorrow but still got to build it lol so thursday friday should be up and running in time for this weeks poultry auction on sunday hehehe. today i put a small run down there in case anyone ends up getting bullied and needs time out. tomorrow i let a few chickens run free see how it goes.

i'm just curious what is behind all them shrubs and things is there a Fence or no as your chickens can just walk away trust me they are clever when it comes to hiding or walking off and I hope you put chicken wire or mesh on the gate and fence as that shrub in the front they will hop up and over.

You will have to keep the grass nice and short so they don't get compacted crop from the long grass blades blocking their crop.
