Windfall Plums
« on: July 07, 2011, 15:49 »
I have been given some windfall plums, seem quite mouldy actually, can I use these for jams, chutneys or wines?

If you cut the mouldy bits out they should be fine for any of the preserving methods you mentioned. :)

The first windfall plums often carry maggots inside ! :tongue2:
If you are going to the trouble and expense of making jam i would always use the best fruit not windfalls.

We used to have a plum tree at the bottom our garden at home, so I've helped make many a chutney, jam and wine with all those windfalls. :D

but you have to cut them up to remove the stones and mouldy bits so you would find any maggots.........same as for later plums that are waspy..shrugs shoulders

Just pointing out that 8 out of 10 early windfall plums can have a grub in them and once a plum has bounced it goes mouldy in a few hours.
I would not even give them away ! I do give away gallons of good ones! :D
