Misshapen leaves on almost everything
« on: June 19, 2011, 18:10 »
I really don't know what is happening but almost everything I grow this year has the leaves affected by looking bubbled, misshapen, and twisted. This is happening to for instance Chard, Basil, chili, salad leaves. There have been a lot of aphids about of late which could be the cause but some of the leaves haven't any on at all. There are sometimes little bit holes out of them that are not the hallmarks of slugs

Worth checking this thread to see if it's weedkiller contaminated manure that caused it. I had this problem recently and am in cheshire as well.

It has happened on a number of plots on our site.
The provider of manure assures us that no weedkiller was used on the straw used for the manure.

However I'm certain that it is herbicide damage which could happen one of 2 ways, either by the spray travelling in the wind, usually when a fine sprayer is used; or if the spray was applied on a hot day, the vapour can rise off the plants and spread across to neighbouring crops. I've seen this on a large scale on farms as well as on the allotment.

A safer way to use herbicide is with a fine rose watering can and be careful what weather it is applied in. However difficult on an allotment site as cant control what your neighbours do!

I don't use any sprays or manure. All my compost was from B and Q and I feed with liquid nettle and comfry grown in my garden.

Have you had any late frosts - that could have caused some problems. If you have aphids you could try spraying with soapy water - just a small squirt of washing up liquid in water would do. I also add a little oil (olive or what ever you have) as it helps the mixture to stick. Do not forget to spray under the leaves as that is where the aphids usually hide.

Nearly forgot - do not spray in sunshine - that could burn your plants.

Earlier this year we were having hot days and then cold night, and a lot of plants were making funny foliage in reaction to the wildly fluctuating temperatures.
It's still quite cool at night, even in the greenhouse it's getting down to 11/12C  :(

Warmer weather would sort the problems out I think, and keep an eye on the aphids ::)
