Sick chicken again!
« on: June 12, 2011, 09:18 »
Over the last few days my bantam has gone down hill. Started off she seemed broody and was spending time in nest box. She seemed to get over that and started coming outside but seemed a bit slower than usual. Noticed that occasional her face seemed a bit pale though looks ok now. But she has now got to the point where she spends most of her time lying down. She can barely stand up. She will eat a bit of moist bread and a few grains of corn but no interest in pellets or mash. Took her to vet on Friday and she couldn't find any obvious problem but gave her injection for pain relief just in case. But chook was still walking ok then . Now she just lies down. Not pooing much at all. When she does it is mostly white and runny with a bit of lumpy green in it. Started giving her flubenvet (in case its worms) on Friday on a bit of moist bread. She's about 3 years old.
No other symptom. Comb is good colour. No wheezes etc. Vet could not find any problems. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks
When she stand she seems unbalanced but maybe she is just weak.

what breed is she? Some only have a life span of about 3 years  :(.
You could try making a porridge from layers and syringing it into her to get some food in her - her pooh will be mainly white and runny if she is not eating but drinking.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi
Thansks for replying.
She is a light sussex and seemed very sprightly until these last few days.
I am going to collect some baytril from the vet today though not sure what good it will do?

Baytril is a very good broad spectrum antibiotic so fingers crossed for you that it works xx

I'm pleased to report that chook is now much better. Within a couple of hours of the first dose of baytril she seemed perkier . Not sure if it can work that fast or whether the couple of doses of flubenvet had done their work.

I looked at the poo photos on this website and her poo did look like the one that said the chook in question had either had worms or egg peritonitis.

Anyway, fingers crossed she is out of the woods.

Thanks for advice. :)
