Sick chicken
« on: September 30, 2007, 22:49 »
Hi

My Blue haze chicken is 2 years old, we got her about a month ago an she is one of three.

She has always been very shy and won't let you pick her up. she just runs away! I think she is at the bottom of the group and she has a very nervous disposition.

She has always had quite runny poos and a dirty bottom but i just thought this was how she was. She is now going to the house earlier than the other two, she let me stroke her today and is doing V runny poos! She also didn't want her corn which is unheard of!

I have given lots of corn on the cob and brockoli this weekend - could it be an OD of these?

Should I take her to the vet and get her antibiotics?

I'd appreciate any omments,
Thanks

Beth

Hi

No I don't think she is laying. we get one a day and I'm pretty sure it's our white chicken laying them, although her poo did look a little yellow.

She has been in hr pen for a couple of days as we had to go away but i keep giving them greens.

If they have the runs do they look this sorry for themselves but perk up?

We did give her a bannana a couple of days ago?

Greens woud not make her seem sorry for herself. She sounds as if she has an infection of some kind.

Feel under her wing to see how hot she is (compare with other chooks).  If she seems warmer then she has a temperature

Is her tummy swolen at all (the area just below her vent  :?:

Hi, here is an update on Saphy's condition:

This morning she got up and had some food and water which is good.

She then went back into the house and sat down looking very under the weather. She has a very mucky behind which is still creamy coloured. (the other two were also in the house but tehy seem fine).

I have a few ideas of what to do and would appreciate your opinion:

Should I take her to the vet? Should I bath her to clean her up and keep her in the house until she feels better to keep her warm? Is there anything I can give her to perk her up a bit?

They are not all stupid when it comes to choox. My vet is really very good....I suppose it makes a difference when you keep your own chickens as he does  :D

Hi

I checked her and seems to be the same as the other two. She also seems to have perked up a bit now.

I'm going to continue just given her the pellets from now on!

About a month ago i wormed them with some working medicine from the vet. How often should you and can you worm them?

I'm going to get some flubenvet as it seems to be the most reccomended.

Thanks for all of everyone's help!
