dried out compost bin
« on: August 31, 2007, 16:23 »
Hello

I have inherited a dried out compost bin - looks to be full of last years onions and other "greens".  So dried out it is full of spiders webs.

Can anyone suggest how I can kick start it back into life - is daily watering enough?  A friend has suggested weeing on it but before I startle my lotto neighbours I thought I would ask for any suggestions about either adding moisture or other contents.

Would I be best to fork it all out (it's at least 2 ft of dried material) and mix this with wetter "fresh" contents?

Kind Regards Vic   :D

I put wee in mine, but also kitchen waste, tea bags, coffee grounds, some newspaper and eggshells. These all seem to make it 'go' quite quickly.

Cover it with a bit of old carpet or some bin liners full of packing material (fairy pillows or polystyrene Ss) to keep the heat in.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I normally pee in mine as well (well, actually i do it in a bottle in the shed and empty the bottle on the heap)

but ive been 'forcibly decaffinated' for health reasons, and have to drink at least three litres of water a day, so its no good as an accelerant anymore, too diluted (still, my chronic cough is clearing up)
