Tomato Problem?
« on: May 06, 2011, 14:22 »
Hi all,

Still fairly new to the world of growing veg so am after some help.

Please find enclosed some pictures of my tomato seedlings.

[They have developed curly leaves and most have some black marks on the leaves so am after some help with what the problem might be and, mor importantly, what the cure is?

Hoping it's not a big problem.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Al

The black looks to only be on the cotyledons, nip them off no problem.

The crispy leaf looks like water scorch but I wouldn't be too happy with the curly leaves.  There are lots of things that could cause it, can you give us a little more details about the plant - where its been kept, what its planted in , have you fed / sprayed with anything.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply.

They're currently in general purpose compost and have been potted on a couple of times. I am planning to put them into their final  pots this weekend with growbags.

I have fed them once with Tomorite just the other day and they have been in an unheated greenhouse during the night and outside during the day.

Many thanks,

Al

Tomato leaf curl is usually caused by both irregular watering and cool temps (your unheated greenhouse). These should get sorted once they're in growbags with more food and regular watering (always a problem with toms - it causes blossom end rot). Once the weather warms up a bit, you'll see the leaves uncurl and green up.

It could be nothing to worry about. Its difficult to get a scale from the pictures but they do look a little top heavy. If you're putting them in direct sun light the roots may no have developed enough to keep the supply of water to the leaves - so they curl to stop evaporation.

Id move them out of the direct sunlight if you can but still somewhere light.

Its certainly too early to feed them, do that when the first fruits have set and your compost looks a little on the wet side. Other than that Id wait and see.

They are a bit young to be on the Tomorite quite yet, as they normally advise starting to use it once the first fruits have set, so while it wont do any harm, it probably wont do much good either.

I would say they have possibly been caught by a cold wind, or cold shower as the weather has been a bit changeable recently (well ours appears to have shot back to winter!)
Also stress can cause leaves to curl, and if you have repotted them multiple times this may be part of the problem.

They should be fine, as most 'nasty' leaf curl involve the leaf curling down first!

Keep an eye on them, and hang on with the Tomorite until you have some fruits to feed- may save you a few pennys!

Good luck and keep us posted.
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
