Polish tomatoes ?
« on: May 05, 2011, 13:43 »
Has anyone on the forum grown the Polish tomatoes Opalka or Linguisa.
Any first hand knowledge of their flavour and cropping would be of interest as i have used the last of my Amish Paste seed and will need to invest in some similar seed  for next year.

Well I'll be able to tell you a lot more in a few months as I'm growning Opalka this year for the first time.  I can see the flowers, but they've not opened just yet so I guess they are an early cropper.

Opalka grows very tall and the foliage is strange and fern-like. So don't go thinking that there is something wrong with them  :D
Flavour and yield ok, but nothing special, I've not grown the other one.

Agree with Mum. the Siberian types grow fast for very short seasons at the expense of great flavor. They're okay but nothing to write home about. but if you get caught often with frost, these will take a bit of light frost easily. My mum grows Stupice (Stoo-peeka) because of her altitude and late and early frosts.

As for Amish paste, I grew them and wasn't at all impressed with them, but as heirloom plants, you could save seed very easily.

I look forward to a report on the harvest LeeR ,hope they do well.

Ta for the info Mumofstig , not the glowing reports i have seen from some American sites but worth a try.

Good thinking Trillium i will try to save some seed from this years amish toms as they are our favourites.
I will need to make some flower bags to avoid pollination from the other 5 varieties in the greenhouse.
What to use paper, tea bags , bits of fleece with wire ties.
Any ideas gratefully received . :)

tomatoes usually self pollinate, it would be unusual if they cross pollinated although they can of course.
I kept seeds from Purple Ukraine for a couple of years without doing anything special, and they came true each year ;)

I grew Aurore last year which hails from the Ukraine (from Real Seeds).  It was very prolific and tasted lovely, but succumbed to late blight, although I managed to rescue most of the crop.  I have to grow outside as no greenhouse.  This year I am trying Stupice as well.  Best to grow varieties with a short growing season as we are in the North (Shipley in Yorkshire).  Also trying Gardener's Delight.
