The reason that I'll never buy worms is that it's all a matter of habitat. Get the habitat right and they'll come all by themselves. If the habitat isn't right then any imported worms are going to die anyway and it's a waste of money.

5 years ago I started on a very 'sterile' patch of solid clay. I b@stard trenched the whole 125sqm and didn't see a worm on the whole patch. Last week I forked it over and saw 3 or 4 worms per forkfull of soil. These had migrated in, came in with the compost/farmyard manure, or hatched from eggs in grass clippings etc.

It's different with worm farms admittedly, but go to the right habitat and you'll collect enough for your 'start up needs'.
