buying seed spuds question
« on: February 09, 2011, 14:24 »
recently went to one of my local places to buy some seed spuds, however the spuds had 4"-5" tubers on them will these be ok to buy or should i look for some with smaller tubers?

thanks

By tubers you mean spruts (sprouts/ shoots) on them?
If the sprut is tiny little things then yes, it just maybe they have been in the shop a few weeks, if the spruts are more than half inch long then I would look elsewhere.

I certainly wouldn't buy any with that amount of growth on them.

There are still plenty of seed potatoes around where the eyes are obvious and showing signs of sprouting but that have not yet done so.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

I'm a bit unclear as to what you mean by 4" - 5" tubers.  Do you mean they had shoots on them 4" - 5" long?  If this is true - walk away.

This a well chitted spud.  A couple of weeks, (depending on the weather) it will be ready for planting.

"They say"  that if you want lots of middle sized spuds, leave all shoots on.  If you want fewer but bigger spuds remove all but one or two chits.  I'll rub off the one on the right and plant the spud with the others uppermost.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I'll rub off the one on the right and plant the spud with the others uppermost.

I read somewhere the other day that you should remove the eyes at the rose end (using a knife to gouge them out, as rubbing them out they will just come back), and grow the potato plant from the eyes on the sides.

Never come across that advice before though ...

The shoots are NOT tubers.

The seed spud itself is a tuber, the shoot is a chit and you do not want long ones.
