Egg like Deflated Balloon?
« on: January 28, 2011, 15:21 »
One of my girls has layed a very small egg with a 'tail' like a deflated balloon.  They all seem well and are eating so it isn't obvious who is the culprit.  Should I be worried?  The 'egg' had a thin brown shell.  Would appreciate some advice.  Many thanks

If its a Hens First egg, then you can get some very "interesting" eggs  :) this is normal, If its been laying before, then it could be a lack of calcium, Are you making sure they have enough by keeping Oyster shell available to them at all times? they will pick at it as and when they Need it.

I'm sure someone with more experience in such things will have a more detailed Explanation soon  :)
I now have the chicken bug woot i love the Poland's

Hi, thx, my girls are 12months old and have access to shell, grit, water and organic layers adlib.  They freerange from around 2pm each day, and have been laying all though the winter.
Had a thought; just recently they have prefered to lay in a corner of the henhouse and not in the nest box, but there are no obvious reasons why, don't know if this has any bearing?

You shouldn't worry they have off days like we do, mine are a couple of year old and every so often we get soft eggs, no shell or very strange looking shaped eggs.  It usually rights itself after a few days.  So long as they are feeding well have access to grit and oyster shell they will be OK.  I also give mine seaweed, garlic flakes, poultry spice and cod liver oil a few times a week, but whether its absolutely necessary I don't know, probably overdoing it, but it makes me feel better if not the chickens lol alison
