plants for inside a run help needed please
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:57 »
hi, i would like to put a few plants inside my chicken run for a few reasons,
1, to soak up any water when it rains as we get the run of from other plots,
2, to make it look nice
3, to make it smell nice(some herbs that grow large may be)
4, also to act as a wind breaker, i have metal and plastic sheeting all around and it works but it's not nice to look at,

any idea's please thankyou,

what about fruit trees small 1's ???,
zoe pattinson :)

From what others have said, be prepared for all your planting to disappear in a flash!  Your hens will love it. :D
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

I have planted fruit trees inside my run and they are fine and doing well (3 years on). Depending on the size when you plant them you may need to protect the trunk and possibly the tops if they are very small. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I have a lilac tree and a climbing rose in mine. After initial investigation they left them alone!

I have rosemary and mint bushes in mine, which they leave alone, and 2 pear trees with clematis climbing through them which they don't touch either, unfortunately they did like wallflowers, but they looked nice for a day lol alison

hi, thankyou for the idea's the herbs sound good, and same with the pear tree, we dont eat many pear's so they can them, all i have to do now is wait till a bit warmer to start planting up, i will put some small plants in first and block of an area where im going to plant then that should give them a chance to grow to a good size and get going then i can remove the wire and plant up another area and so on..
