Keep hearing how you can put nasturtiums in sladas etc so thought I'd pop one in the old cake hole yesterday and give them a try!

For anyone that has not tried them, they taste like..... chicken!!

Just kidding - taste quite like a mild watercress actually. Very tasty indeed with a hint of pepperiness in the background. I can see why they make a great addition to salads - they look so pretty and taste pretty damn good too!!

I planted loads of nasturtiums around the edges of my raised beds and they are all thriving - the whole area is awash with bright orangy-red flowers.

Stoked
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Sounds like you ate a flower but the leaves are a closer substitute for watercress.  Wash well (cabbage white caterpillars like them a lot), and then use in any watercress soup recipe.  They can be a little stringy but taste great.

If you plan to use the flowers, watch out for earwigs since they love to hide out in the back of the flower.   Shredded nasturtium flowers make a lovely colourful garnish for any cream soup or curry.

Hint : makes a handy sacrificial plant to grow on your plot away from your brassicas and keep em away from your runners as blackfly love em too

My bestest success this year has been my roving nastertiums. :D  :D  Their bright little faces all happy and glowing no matter, or rather depite, the weather.
If you cant be a good example then you must  be a horrrible warning........

The lady next door but one (on the plot) is growing lots of these, (i've just googled what nasturtiums look like).

I did wonder why? she was growing so many flowers like this on her plot.

Another day older.... another day wiser...

thanks. :)

Aren't they related to capers :?:   I like them, much preferable to rocket which seems so unnacoutably popular these days.

Different families but you may be thinking about the seeds - pickled nasturtium seeds are suggested as an alternative for capers (which is a pickled flower bud).  I tried pickled nasturtium seeds last year and they smell horrible ... haven't yet picked up the courage to eat one.

So did I, and you're right, tastes like chicken - well, the chicken of salads. The flowers are quite tasty, aren't they? Sweet-ish ans peppery at the same time. The leaves are more peppery. Definitely one to grow every year. Makes a salad very interesting too.
