Nasties
« on: November 28, 2010, 21:57 »
Have new, virgin plot except for a few small furrows of spuds left by previous lessee. Have dug up a few, but all seem to be "worm-eaten" and soil around has what seem to be, larvae of - what?
Know a little of what's what on a plot, but not good at identifying potential dangers. These aliens resemble frog spawn (small, translucent globules). What are they? should I dig them to the surface and let the Birds/icy weather deal with them - or can you help?
Muchas gracias!

Could it be wireworm larvae near the spuds?

And possibly snail / slug eggs?

Without piccies it's difficult to tell ... try googling these images and see if they are similar.  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Could be a fertilizer, iv,e bought pot plants and upon removing the plant have found what you describe. When i asked at the nursery they told me it was slow release fertilser. So if the previous owner was recycling his old pot plant compost , thats what they could be.

NAAAAAAAh ! Slug eggs every time. Dig 'em up and let the birds have a feed.    Cheers,   Tony.

slug eggs gets my vote, turn the ground several times between now and planting in spring and give the frost and birds a chance to do some good. Clear every trace of the old spuds.

All the slug eggs I've seen are pure white not translucent, never less expose them to the frosts / birds. I must say I do get satisfaction from squashing slug eggs
