Can I plant strawberry plants in November?
« on: November 25, 2010, 22:54 »
I have recently taken on another half plot and so have room for a dedicated strawberry bed.  I have rotted runners in plantpots but i wonder whether to leave them potted and plant out in spring or to plant them out now.

I figure if I plant them out the roots will stand a better chance against freezing then in pots outside, but i have also read that the roots could be damaaged in soil upheaval if the ground freezes.

Early autumn is the best time to plant them but having said that I (due to poor planning) usually plant them in the spring.

That's when mine are going in (Spring).... just not enough time when the time was right.

As for planting in November = "Only if you've a snow shovel" it would seem.  ::)  :tongue2:

Just found a good page on the RHS site:

Thanks Aunt Sally - some useful information  :)

Thanks Aunt Sally :-) I'm still in a quandry about whether to commit my potted runners to the bed or to keep them in pots until spring - danger is they might freeze off in the pots?

Put them in a box packed with straw, and put them in your shed; this should keep them fairly cosy

Some of mine are still in 1Lt pots and that's where they will have to stay for now at least  ::)

Yes, 1L pots would give a bit more insulation.

If I put them in the garage would they need light at this end of the year? There is a window I could put them against - of course I would have to water them.

They should be OK in pots over winter, just think Garden Centers leave theirs out and sell them in the spring.

mine are in pots in the greenhouse - they will be potted on and put outside at the end of Feb if I stick to my plans and the weather is good enough

I've got some in pots on my conservatory windowsill.  Thought they'd be safe there and then couldn't understand why they started to look so scraggy.  Until I saw one of my cats eating the leaves.

My strawberry bed is in a real mess
I've got some seeds in the freezer which i have to take out in about 3 weeks time to pot on the windowsill in the kitchen.
Should i leave the plants i already have in the ground, & would digging up & replanting the ones i have be a bad idea - just want to tidy the bed up?

If your weather is as cold as ours I'd leave well alone at the moment.  :(
