Very sick chicken
« on: November 24, 2010, 08:26 »
I have a chicken diagnosed with campylobacter which I'm giving anti-biotics mixed in water. She stopped eating and drinking 3 days ago. She's getting water with the anti-biotics via the syringe down her throat twice a day (approx 100ml each) but she cannot eat by herself.
Is there any type of food I can force- feed her until she is able to feed herself?
She's still hanging in there- just; but without food she can't last much longer.

have you tried making her pellets into a gruel and syringing it into her?
Staffies are softer than you think.

mix the layers pellets into a paste then if you open her beak you crop feed using the back of a teaspoon about 10 pellets should be enough to start with then as she builds up her strength you increase i have crop fed a number of hens and this is the best way i have found  :)

Suggest don't worry about proper food for a day or so; add sugar to the water and give her as much as she'll take. Best of luck.
