apples & blueberries
« on: July 25, 2007, 08:54 »
During this (wet) summer, my garden has got a little neglected.  The lawn never seems dry out enough to pull the lawn mower out of the shed, and sadly it has become a meadow.  Last night I decided I ought to see how my fruit trees were fairing and the Discovery apple tree was shedding its rather small apples.  I picked one of the tree, bit into it and was amazed to find that they are indeed ready to harvest! :o

Then I decided to check out the blueberry bushes, thinking the blackbirds had probably stripped off all the berries by now (I haven't managed to get round to building a fruit cage yet so they are the best fed birds in my garden!) and ..... great bunches of ripe blueberries were hanging there ready to be picked!  I couldn't get into the house quick enough for a container.  The berries are HUGE, almost like grapes, and incredibly sweet.

Normally my garden is kept neat and tidy, but the tall grass obviously hid this little bounty from the birds.  Perhaps that is the trick!

I've eaten all my blueberries - but they were the biggest I have ever grown. Every day I would come home from work, straight out to the bush and scoffed!!
Must be the wet and warm that's done it.

Blueberries do love lots of water and now is the harvest time. Not familiar with your Discovery apple but it could be an early one as well.
As for your meadow, most of us are too neat and tidy with our gardens and literally present our bounty to the pests. I don't overly weed my strawberry patch and do very well with it since the birds can't really see them, nor are they willing to land where an unseen predator might be lurking.  I've also heavily mulched my raspberry patch and the birds eat only at the borders.
