Jerusalem Artichoke Tubers
« on: November 02, 2010, 16:38 »
Hi we're new to the site and have just taken over an allotment. Very excited. A kindly neighbouring allotmenteer has given us a large pile of Artichoke Tubers and we were wondering how we should store them until planting time.
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks

Get them in the ground right away.  4 - 5 inches deep and about 6 inches apart.  They can grow to ten - twelve feet tall and are VERY invasive so select your plot carefully.

Are they particularly knobbly?  If so I would think of saying thank you, eating them and buying a variety called Fuseau.  If they are Fuseau all the better.

Fuseau are far less knobbly, rather the shape of a smaller sweet potato.   ::) Watch how the wind blows  ::)  Cheers,   Tony
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Thanks for that Tony,

We have such alot to learn, but some are knobbly and some just look like small potatoes.  We knew they could take over, but were thinking of putting them in a container in the ground to try and prevent them from doing that!  Many thanks though.

If you have lots of them then I would try cooking and eating some to check you actually like them. I grew a load last year after being given some and after harvesting I found no one in my family liked them. I did not sow any this year and actually have more growing then last year from the ones I missed while harvesting! As someone has said they are invasive / hard to get rid of so do check you like them before planting.
