I'm afraid that the best way i have found is to put down horse bran. Surround the crop needing protection and even any slugs inside he circle will enjoy munching on the bran rather than your lettuce etc. and will eat themselves to a suitable 'end'.

I tried the bran method last year but not sure if it worked or not as I didn't find any dead, bloated slugs in the veg patch. The slugs havn't found my courgette plants yet this season, I wonder if it's because the plants are next to a large clump of comfry?

I'm lucky (and will probably regret saying that), I don't have a big problem but I am told horse hair (mane and tail) is better than human - I must a small hair harvest and get my ponies contributing more.

Our horses have finished shedding their winter coats now, most of it has been snaffled by the swallows to make duvets in their nests, maybe when they've finished with the horse hair I can re use it in my fight against slugs  ::)

Aha... we clipped one of the horses today... I'll have to try and salvage some hair for my decimated carrot and parsnip patch before the swallows snaffle it to pad out their nests.  I'm going to be trying out the coffee too, and might resort to brewing up some garlic drench if need be :)

I made some garlic drench yesterday and though I had read how it makes the house smell, I think I underestimated just how much, I am still walking round spraying oust. i just hope it gets rid of the slugs because it sure has got rid of the neighbours

Has anyone tried the garlic drench on leafy greens? I just planted a load of seeds and thinking ahead about protection.
