Sweetcorn do seem to live life on the edge in that the male spikes usually appear before the female silks which makes for a bit of a nervous wait (although you do get used to it!   )

My theory is that the relative failure of the second or third cobs to develop properly is more due to lack of pollination than running out of suitable weather, hence the notion that two adjacent batches a few weeks apart might improve the overall result.
