Hi All,

I have managed to grow three butternut squash this year, and a Dumpling one. I have noticed that the skins of the butternut have now gone the sort of browny beigey colour I would expect, but  I am not sure when to harvest them. In Carole Kleins book, it says to leave them outside in the sun for a few days to harden, but I am still confused. I have never grown squash before, so would appreciate any advice given.

As the forecast is for cold for the next few nights.........I'd either fleece them until they ripen or bring them in onto a sunny windowledge

I have to bring them in to stop the plot thief taking them for his/her dinner.

Mine our happy on the windowsill, infact one has already been eaten (by us)

If they have changed colour cut them leaving plenty of stalk and put them indoors, a sunny conservatory or window sill is fine for hardening.
If you leave them too long in damp (normal UK) weather they start to rot at the stalk.
