cockerel help: selective breeding
« on: July 18, 2007, 11:59 »
Hello everyone, what a little gem this site is.
I have been keeping hens for about a year, I have one hen about a year old and 5 hens that have been aying for about 8 weeks.  we recently aquried a cockerel from a neighbour who had too mnay, he was the least dominate.  He has settled in well but only breeds with the eldest hen and ignores all the others, was realy hoping he would breed with all of them because we want to breed the hens.
Our old cockerel used to breed with anything that moved.
Any help much appreciated.
Harry

well i am free on saturday but can you realy say the hens will fancy me. lol.
maybe he is thinking like the old bull should i run over to the hens and make love to a few or walk over and make love to them all.
ok seriously nature will take its course and he will tread them all if he hasent done so already, just cos you havent seen him doesent mean he hasent .

I would agree, just because you haven't seen him tread them all doesn't mean he hasn't. Give him time to get used to them  all.

I have black silkie cockerel (eddie), 1 ginger silkie hen (daisy) and a sultan hen (polly).

Eddie appears to bonk (tread?) polly on a regular basis (umpteen times throughout day) and doesn't appear to show any interest in daisy.

Also Polly & Eddie seem to be as thick as thieves & I sometimes think that Daisy is a little left out.

They've been brought up together and still go around the garden as a pack but often Polly & Eddie sit cuddled up close with space between them and daisy.

They remind me of a little gang of young teenagers.
