Which squash variety
« on: July 28, 2010, 17:06 »
Last month I planted out several squash plants I grew from bought seed and also from squash bought at the supermarket - Pattison's Sunburst (pattypan), Butternut, Kabocha, Crown Prince and Potimarron.  As soon as they were in the ground, I forgot which was which (as usual!) but they are all growing well and I have identified the butternut (easy) and pattypan.  However, one plant has four round yellow squash growing like mad and I am not sure what it is.I just cut one thinking it was ready, but now I'm not so sure - could it be Crown Prince or Kabocha - do they start off yellow?

I'm growing Invincible which is just like Crown Prince. They have started off a very pale green/grey colour so i don't think it's them.

Both end up a steel grey colour as you probably know.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

They look just like my Uchi kuchi do at this moment.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I don't think I planted Uchi Kuchi, so that just leaves Kabosha - has anyone grown them and can tell me if they start of yellow?

I don't think so becasue they end up dark grey, so would be green before not yellow.

Potimarron (which are very very scrummy imho) are bright yellow when young but end up brilliant orange  :D :D :D

Maybe that's it then.  I grew Potimarron last year - I don't remember them being yellow when young but I will leave the others on and wait and see.  I just got a bit twitchy because we recently saw a swarthy looking man with a baseball cap and a Lidl bag hanging around by the allotment gate and I think he was one of those Eastern Europeans who regard swans and carp as fair game and want a bit of veg to accompany them  :)

BTW it seems to be fantastic year for squash and courgettes - mine are going absolutely mad (with a bit of watering) - they must be appreciating this wonderful summer.

Tell me about it....We like courgettes, but every year I say 2 plants will be enough,so why have we got 4 in ?..............Just got back from my plot absolutely laden with courgettes and a couple of small marrows that obviously escaped yesterdays picking....Even by courgette standards I am getting spectacular crops of the things 8)

It's amazing how those pesky courgettes can disguise themselves as leaf stalks until they are just too big to get away with it :)
