small squash/pumpkin variety suggestions.
« on: April 15, 2015, 16:39 »
Thanks to Surbie  ::) I've bought 2 garden arches and I already have the green wire netting to fix to them.

I'm going to grow sweet peas on one side of each - gherkins on the other side of 1, and thought of a squash for the other side of the 2nd.

I know Tromboncino climbs but that would swamp the arch  I like Celebration/Festival (and have seeds for these) but don't know if they would climb?
Or can anyone else recommend another variety? - but I don't like Rolet much  :nowink:

Read on web somewhere that it would, and I don't know about supporting - how windy is your site? The squash are small.

I am growing Butternut Chieftain F1 up supports this year, they are quite compact plants and the fruits are a nice small size.

I'm trying the Munchkin pumpkins as well as some small non-edible spinning gourds (because they look pretty!) both from Sarah Raven. I'm going to also try a Potimarron squash planted in a bin over a horizontal trellis or palette.

How about Thelma Sanders sweet potato acorn squash?   Fantastic taste and brilliant keeper.  I haven't grown it up an arch, but the fruits are quite small (1 will serve 3 of us as a dinner side dish quite nicely) and could easily be supported I think.

And she also mentions a lot of pinching out is needed, which will make smaller fruits!

(If you've got the same book as me, Flowertot, then can you ever stop dipping into it - I can't..;0)

In cased you haven't noticed my avatar is a Thelma Sanders which I've grown since the year dot, as many forum members will attest
I find it grows quite heavy fruit, and a lot of them, so I wouldn't fancy trying it on an arch tbh - but I'm glad you like it as much as I do :D

On your recommendation, I grew these last year, and they were fab. In fact I still have some in store they were so prolific

I did grow a couple up and over a frame, and they were fine despite their weight.

I can also recommend Winter Festival, which are small round stripy fruit that are incredibly prolific and early too  :D

I think one of those slot together arches would collapse under the weight - but perhaps not

I delved to the bottom of the seed box, this morning, and I've found an old packet of Sweet Lightning (never opened) so I'll try those.

Thanks everybody for the ideas.
