Chick with broken wing
« on: July 13, 2010, 18:44 »
Hi all, our friend from the village was having trouble with his 2 new hens.  they are really noisy won't eat properly, then one of them went broody.  He tried all ways but she just squawked all day.  so I gave him 3 eggs to put under her.  All 3 hatched, but I'm afraid she isn't a good Mum.  I've had the first chick here for nearly a week with a bad wound on her body, and now tonight he brought the other 2 round.

It looks like one of them has a broken wing, but it's so tiny, can I do anything to set it?

If I bind the wing to its body, will it heal?  or being so little, not a week old yet, will i have to cull it?

Any advice gratefully received.

bind it up and strap it to the chickens body, it should hopefully knit together ok. These little ones have had such a struggle so far so you have to give it a chance, and if anybody can do it you can  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi Grannie
We had to do this with a chick my daughters hen had hatched, we got one of those really thin bandages and bound it, leaving the other wing out, we found we had to bind it round the neck (not to tight LOL) so that it didnt fall off, done that almost every day for about 5 weeks, she is fine now and has gone on to lay some beautiful eggs for her.
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

Do you know, I didn't think I'd had any replies to this post as I usually only check my 'unread posts since last visit'.  So something is wrong with my system!

thanks both of you.  I'll have to try the bandage round the neck thing Nails!  I've bound his/her wing to body twice now and both times he/she has wriggled out of it!

Anthony had also said the chicks weren't eating, as Mum only let's them eat one little bit of chick crumb then she takes them away and back to the nest box, but he said that's because the other hen tries to eat all their food, but since they've been here, they've started to eat properly now!  I hope the little one will be okay.  I'll try the binding round the neck as well bit tomorrow!

I'll let you know how they get on.  Here they are!
