Goji Bush
« on: June 24, 2010, 20:02 »
I have two goji bushes in pots (morrison's flower pots), they were spreading a good 4ft so I pushed some canes in the ground around the pots and tied twine around to hold the branches upwards.

They don't look good, I'm not so sure they were looking great before I done this so i'm not sure if they just don't  like being in pots or if they don't like their branches pointing upwards.

Any advice?
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

I've got ten of them in pots.

Like yours they are prostrate when I was expecting upright bushes.  Had them for three years and they still look nothing like the pictures in the ads or in web articles. They were supposed to be likely to flower in their first year but haven't seen anything yet.

All the articles I've read suggest they'd grow anywhere, drought or flood.

If I get time I'm going to plant a few of them in the ground in a bit of my plot which is unused. Hoefully it will spur them into life, I'll get berries then I'll live forever.

LOL @ live forever...... the very thought makes me shudder

The leaves on these ones are limp, they were limpish looking before I tied them up but worse now that I have, not a sign of a flower.

This one comes up regularly and I think the ads you see in UK magazines and papers have a lot to answer for  ::)

Goji bushes are big sprawling beasties and although they do grow wild in some fairly harsh conditions, like most fruit you will get more if you pamper them a bit.

Pots are OK if they are really big, but you will do better in open ground.  A really sunny spot and some good soil enriched with compost or manure will also help.  The most productive bushes I have seen were growing on wires almost like a hybrid berry.

Hope you do better nest year and live long and prosper  ;)

i recieved a goji bush last year as a gift and was unuccessful in a pot too. I spoke to some people at a horticultural show and they said i had 2 problems. Firstly i potted it up wrong, needed some john innes no.3 in there and secondly they grow their fruit on old wood so when i hacked it back because it was all straggley i hadnt done myself any favours. However they did say i could grow it in a pot and have fruit but to do they above.
