Do chickens get hayfever?
« on: June 12, 2010, 09:15 »
Flo has been sneezing for just over a week now.

I'm not going to take her to the vets as she is not ill - she's pecking and scratching well, lays every day and rumages around the compost around like a thing posessed, just like her non-sneezy sisters. She's just sneezy, even when she's clambering over me taking treats.

One of mine sneezes now & then & has been dong his for a few weeks now.
She looks no different to the others, is laying as normal & is quite happy.
I did wonder if they could suffer from this also or it was the woodchip i use in their house.

I would take her to the vets, she could have a respiratory infection that is just in the incubation period and before too long it could have spread through all of your hens with disastrous consequences. If it is an allergy then at least your vet will tell you the best antihistamine and dosage for them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Might be a silly question but where would or what would give them that?
She's not doing this alot just every now & then.
I can't remember which one does it now so will have to sit & watch before i phone vets

I have a RIR hen that spent all last summer sneezing, and I thought she had an infection, treated her with antibiotics, still the same.  Then in the winter she suddenly stopped.  Springs comes and she started again.

I still had some aureomycin and Joy gave me some Denagard which you can use together, she was still doing it, but if I crush up a clarityn tablet in her water, she is fine.

But Joy's advice re vets is sound, better to be safe if these chickens are your pets rather than just egg layers!

Well from posting on here yesterday about it i haven't seen or heard a single sneeze ::)

I gave there slabs a wash & did a quick tidy up (with help from girls :nowink:), then was around near them for quite a while. No sneezing from any of them.
I have a choice of 2 that it could be as i no "Little One" isn't the one.
Been out with them this morning & still heard nothing.

Will probably phone vets monday to speak to them

Thank you for the advice.

Will see what t'vet has to say Monday.

She doesn't appear to be ill: this morning she fought the others off a piece of bacon rind. I am going to so have to make a video of that! Fingers crossed that it's just the pollen from the flowers (i.e. weeds).
