Raspberry Weevil
« on: May 20, 2010, 09:29 »
Hi Guys

I live in the South West and on our allotment site we have discovered some sort of weevil that has invaded the raspberry canes...

Has anyone else found them on the plot? I think they are leaf curling weevils but I cannot be sure. Found some in curled up leaves but also found some that are clay coloured and some black ones.

Will get the Nikon out and post some phots. They are devastating creatures on all accounts.

This is even before the Raspberry beetle has reared its ugly head...

Please let me know your experiences.

Paul

Provado Ultimate Bug Killer should solve your problem. No idea if there is an organic solution.

Hi Salmo

I have looked into that and that is for containers.

I'm toying with the idea of using nematodes....

there are a few Provado bug killers and it's only the Vine weevil one that's usually used for containers.
The one that Salmo has suggested is for fruit and veg, flowers.

Hi Mumofstig

I cannot be sure what sort of weevil they are?  They are all different colours, black, brown and some shiny green ones.  I have found them curled in leaves but I have also found them loose on the leaves.

I will check the link thanks....

From what I have been reading they start off on the plants in an eating frenzy, then they mate and lay their eggs in the soil.  The grubs that hatch are the destructive part as they eat the roots of the host plant causing it to topple.

I still cannot be sure what type of weevil I have.  I have tried to take pictures but the camera will not focus properly.

Sorry if I  sound confusing but I could do with identifying the beast.......
